Lost but not forgotten

It will be 2 years ago this August that we would be tested as an outdoor adventure duo (pre Two4adventure). I had made the plans and set everything up for us to explore the Western Uplands trail in the popular Algonquin Park located in Ontario, Canada. Our trip would have us on the trails for 4 days, 3 nights covering approximately 60 km of the backcountry, entirely by foot. Equipped with a Canon T2i and 2 GoPro Hero 2 we set out on the trails to document our adventure. Mother nature viewed things differently.

The day leading up to us arriving at the trailhead had been filled with scattered showers and humidity and this was the case when we arrived. We waited out a 20 minute downpour in my vehicle and then donned our gear when we caught a break in the weather. Cameras were mounted and and ready to go, so we thought. We set out on the trail with light rain and sunny periods throughout the start of our adventure. This changed very drastically about an hour into the hike. It began to downpour, a heavy rain with completely grey sky and no end in site. We sought refuge under a canopy of trees near a small waterfall. The view was amazing! we were situated eye level with the pond watching the rain drops connect with the body of water. At this point Wayne had the Canon under a rain poncho out of the elements, but this wasn't enough. after the rain subsided we took stock of our situation finding out that the Canon had stopped working due to moisture. Discouraged about the situation we pressed forward and reached Maggie lake after approx. 5.5hrs of hiking. We set up camp, I took full advantage of a warm skinny dip in the water as it rained. We ate dinner and retired to the tent early in hopes of better weather the next day.

We woke on Day #2 to the sound of rain on the tent. Motivation to start the day was lost, yet we put on our wet clothing (TIP: Keep your dry clothing dry and your wet clothing wet if that is your only option) and as tough as it was at that moment, we moved forward to our day 2 destination Pincher Lake. We arrived at Pincher Lake after 7.5 hrs of hiking and the camera still not working. The GoPro`s on the other hand were still capturing footage (again, so we thought). We had passed some breath taking views and so far had only ran into two people and that was 2 hours into the first day, it was absolute solitude. Yet the entire day we were pounded by rain. When we arrived at camp 2 we were greeted once again by a local loon who came to check in on us and then floated away letting out a "Yodel" to let us know this is his lake and we are just visitors (Note: The same occurrence happened on Maggie lake the day prior). Once again, we took in the surroundings, had dinner and went to bed just after sundown.

With Day #3 came sunshine, not much at first but then the sky opened. We had high hopes for what the day was going to bring and it delivered. From Pincher Lake to Lupus lake, our Day #3 destination, was just more awe inspiring sites yet it was more easier to take in with the beautiful weather we were now having. There was a spring in our step and an overflow of optimism. It was a remarkable day. We reached Lupus Lake after another 7.5 hrs of hiking and had a swim, were greeted by another loon and recapped the day as we did the days prior. Sleep set in rather quickly after the sun was swallowed by the silhouette of the trees.

Day #4, our final day had us up before sunrise and breaking camp due to family obligations and a deadline to be home. We hiked 3.5 hrs back to the trailhead to cap of our adventure. We said our silent goodbyes to the section of Algonquin that is now embedded into our memories, and that it is!

Memories were all we had, all of the footage caught on the GoPro`s was captured to low and showed hours of the trail in front of our feet (boring) and Wayne`s Canon never did work even after drying out. What we did do is chalk this up to experience(and lack there of) and it may just have been the seed that was planted to create Two4adventure, We don`t have the pictures or video to look back on, but as nice as that is, these are memories that only the two of us have and that will never be forgotten (enter Bee incident) Maybe in another article:)

P.S.

Sorry for the lack of photos attached to this article, there were none:)

Until next time, adventure awaits!
